Its restoration has become a symbol of the rebirth of the area struck by the earthquake. It has been a long task, requiring great patience, in which ancient materials and cutting-edge techniques have been interwoven. It has been an emotional experience for the workers who have been involved in the reconstruction, happy to bring back to life an icon of CMB’s city of birth.
The building was damaged during the earthquakes that struck Emilia in 2012. The tambour was seriously damaged, causing detachment and collapsing which, in turn, damaged the roof and the interior. The walls and frescoes suffered widespread damage throughout the building.
CMB carried out the structure consolidation work and part of the restoration, continuing with the final lot of finishings, structures and true and proper restoration. It dealt with the structures, the roof, the paintings and the systems. The building was reopened for worship on Saturday 25 March 2017 with a solemn ceremony led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin and with the presence of many other cardinals, bishops and priests.
